The SASS Foundation for Medical Research, mourns the passing of a renowned member of its International Scientific Board, Dr. Judah Folkman. Dr. Folkman passed away suddenly on Tuesday, January 14, 2008 as he was en route to a medical conference in Vancover, British Columbia.
Dr. Folkman was a path-breaking cancer researcher, whose years of tireless work, led to successful and revolutionary treatments in fighting cancer. Dr. Folkman was a pioneer in the ideology of keeping tumors in check by choking off the supply of blood that is needed for them to grow. His innovative approach is now embodied in several successful cancer drugs, notably Avastin.
"His ideas and vision literally changed the course of modern medicine," declared Dr. William Li, a former student of Dr. Folkman.
"His legacy of discovery in the field of angiogenesis will continue to inspire cancer researchers and give hope to countless cancer patients."
Dr. Folkman was a valued and well respected member of the prestigious International Scientific Board of The SASS Foundation and the entire medical community at large. We extend our deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to the Folkman family.
Dr. Folkman's passing is a tragic loss for all mankind.
